"SOIL AND SOFTWARE
The decline in the number of farms is likely to accelerate in the coming
years with advances in agricultural software and farm robotics. Agrocultural software is already being developed to assist farmers in monitoring the environment, locating problem areas, devising internvention strategies, and implementing action plans. In the near future, computerized "expert systems" will collect data on weather changes, soil conditions, and other variables from computer-based sensors located on the land and use the information to make specific recommendations to the farmer. Highly specialized robots will be instructed, in tum, to carry out many of the computer-generated action plans. Many expert systems are currently being tested around the country. Virginia Tech has developed the Crop Rotation Planning System (CROPS) to assist farmers in evaluating the risk of soil erosion and nutrient and pesticide leaching and runoff. The farmer enters data on soil type, topography, land use, and field size into the computer.".
